Marriage Is a Journey, Not a Destination

A healthy marriage isn't built in one grand moment. It's built through thousands of small choices made with love, grace, faith, and commitment.
A healthy marriage isn't built in one grand moment. It's built through thousands of small choices made with love, grace, faith, and commitment.

When I stood before a judge at eighteen years old, promising to love my husband for the rest of my life, I had no idea what those vows truly meant.

If I'm honest, I thought marriage was something you figured out once and then happily lived ever after. I quickly discovered that marriage isn't a destination you arrive at. It's a journey you choose every single day.

Some days are filled with laughter, celebration, and sweet moments that become treasured memories. Other days stretch your patience, test your commitment, and teach you more about grace than you ever imagined.

After 52 years of marriage, I've learned that the strongest marriages aren't built because two people never struggle. They're built because two people keep choosing to grow—individually, together, and with God at the center.

Over the years, my husband and I experienced seasons of joy and seasons of heartache. We learned that communication mattered more than being right. We discovered that forgiveness wasn't a one-time event but a lifestyle. We found that friendship often carried us through seasons when romance felt distant. And we realized that endurance wasn't simply hanging on—it was trusting God to strengthen us when we felt weak.

Those lessons became the foundation of what I now call L.I.F.E.:

Love — Love is more than a feeling. It is choosing kindness, patience, respect, and grace, even when it's difficult.

Intimacy — Intimacy grows when husbands and wives feel emotionally safe enough to share their hearts, not just their schedules.

Friendship — The happiest couples never stop enjoying one another. They laugh together, support each other, and remain one another's greatest encourager.

Endurance — Every marriage will face challenges. Endurance is the quiet faithfulness that keeps choosing hope, trusting God, and believing that difficult seasons don't have to define your story.

Today, my own journey looks different than I ever expected. After saying goodbye to my husband, I carry both precious memories and profound gratitude for the life we shared. While I deeply miss walking beside him, I remain thankful for everything our marriage taught me. Those lessons didn't end when his earthly journey ended. They continue to shape my life and fuel my passion to encourage other wives.

That's why I'm here.

Not because I had a perfect marriage.

Not because I know all the answers.

But because I've experienced the beauty of growing through every season, and I believe every wife can continue growing, too.

No matter where you find yourself today—whether you're newly married, facing challenges, rebuilding trust, or simply wanting a deeper connection with your husband—remember this:

A healthy marriage isn't built in one grand moment. It's built through thousands of small choices made with love, grace, faith, and commitment.

Marriage is a journey.

Walk it with intention.

Walk it with hope.

Walk it with God.

Reflection

What is one small choice you can make this week that will strengthen your marriage?

With love,
